Our Story
Organizations have the power to change lives.
Alston & Co. Impact Strategies was born from a simple belief: organizations have the power to change lives when they have the strategy, leadership, capacity, and partnerships needed to fulfill their purpose.
Throughout my career, I have worked with organizations focused on creating opportunity, strengthening communities, and improving outcomes for the people they serve. Much of my work has been rooted in education and workforce development, including communities where access to educational and economic opportunity has not always been equitable.
Those experiences shaped how I understand organizational change.

What We Saw
When organizations struggle, the impact does not stop within the organization.
I have seen what is possible when talented people come together around a shared purpose. I have also seen how even well-intentioned organizations can struggle to turn that purpose into results. Leadership transitions, competing priorities, changing environments, limited capacity, disconnected systems, and resistance to change can make it difficult to move forward.
It reaches the people and communities they were created to serve. That realization is at the heart of Alston & Co.
We help organizations navigate change, strengthen capacity, develop people, build partnerships, and turn ideas into strategies that can be implemented. Our goal is not simply to solve a problem or complete a project. It is to help organizations become stronger change agents—better equipped to create the conditions where the people they serve can succeed.

Because positive outcomes should not be the exception. They should be the expectation.

Meet Dr. Sophia Alston
Educator. Strategist. Facilitator. Builder. Change Agent.
My journey to becoming a strategist and consultant began long before Alston & Co. I am a product of New York City public schools, where I experienced firsthand the power education can have to expand opportunity and shape a person’s trajectory. That experience became a foundation for a career centered on education, learning, leadership, and creating opportunities for others.
I earned my bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and my master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. My academic journey allowed me to explore education, policy, curriculum, leadership, and the systems that influence how people learn and create opportunity.
But some of my most important lessons have come from the work itself.
Two Decades of Practice
Those experiences taught me something I carry into every engagement:
Good intentions are not enough.
For more than two decades, I have worked across education, postsecondary career and technical education, workforce development, nonprofit, and community settings. I have taught for more than 15 years, led national initiatives, designed professional learning and curriculum, managed large-scale and grant-funded projects, developed partnerships, facilitated complex conversations, and designed national conferences and convenings.
I have worked alongside educators, institutional leaders, workforce professionals, funders, employers, community organizations, and other stakeholders committed to creating better opportunities for the people they serve.
Organizations can have a strong mission, talented people, and ambitious goals—and still need support to move from where they are to where they want to be. Sometimes organizations need a fresh perspective. Sometimes they need help navigating change. Sometimes they need to bring people together around a shared vision. And sometimes they need the space, structure, and strategy to determine what comes next.
That is the role I want Alston & Co. to play. I don’t believe in coming into an organization with all the answers. I believe in asking the right questions, listening deeply, understanding the context, bringing people together, and building solutions with the people who will carry the work forward.
My work is grounded in the belief that when organizations are stronger, the people and communities they serve have a greater opportunity to thrive. My goal is not simply to help organizations solve today’s challenges. It is to help them become stronger change agents for tomorrow.
